PGY-2 Residency Director

The Veterans Health Administration VISN 21 Pharmacy Benefits Management Group (VISN 21 PBM) announces a one-year advanced residency in Managed Care Pharmacy, Applied Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes.

The VA Sierra Pacific Network is dedicated to serve the pharmaceutical care needs of Veterans by preparing Managed Care and Pharmacoeconomic clinicians for positions that focus on evidence based practice applied to individual, small and large populations of patients.  The VISN is committed to providing an environment that promotes academic excellence, service and scholarship, encourages each resident to intellectual and personal development and fosters the development of lifelong learners committed to advancing the profession of pharmacy.

Outcomes

  1. Possess expert knowledge and skill to provide evidence-based, high quality and cost effective pharmaceutical care to individual, small and large populations of patients
  2. Demonstrate skills characteristic of a professional (including self-evaluation)
  3. Demonstrate clinical research and teaching skills
  4. Design and implement clinical programs to enhance the efficacy of patient care
  5. Ensure the safety and quality of the medication-use system
  6. Provide medication and practice-related information, education, and/or training
  7. Provide VISN stations with effective benefit structures to service specific population needs
  8. Exercise leadership and practice management skills
  9. Demonstrate project development, implementation and management skills
 


The VA Sierra Pacific Network (VISN 21) includes 6 VA Medical Centers in Northern NevadaNorthern CaliforniaHawaii and the Philippines.  Health information and medication utilization for the 300,000+ veterans in VISN 21 can be virtually analyzed by the Health Informatics Data Warehouse of the VISN 21 PBM Managers Group.  This group links the 6 Medical Centers through data warehousing of patient health information.  Data and Program Managers are located in Palo Alto, CA, Martinez, CA, Sacramento, CA and Reno, NV.  The VISN Pharmacy Benefits Manager is located in Reno, NV.  The principle location for the resident will be in Reno, NV with opportunities to work throughout VISN 21 with the Data Warehouse Managers and VISN 21 Clinical Pharmacy Specialists.

Collaboration with Pharmacoeconomic Pharmacists and Clinical Program Coordinators from these sites provides evidence-based care to our veteran population.  Skill development will include:

  • Development and implementation of Performance Measures and metrics
  • Formulary management, therapeutic conversions, contract evaluations, patient panel analysis, drug use criteria and guideline development and application
  • OLAP data warehouse management and MS SQL Server training and use
  • Dashboard development and business intelligence tool training and use
  • Potential for a longitudinal clinical practice site

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of pharmacy with Pharm.D. degree
  • Completion of first-year pharmacy practice residency or equivalent experience
  • United States citizenship
  • Valid Pharmacy License

Early Commitment

A PGY1 resident currently participating in a PGY1 VA Sierra Pacific Network residency program may be eligible for promotion to the PGY2 residency in Managed Care Pharmacy Systems through the early commitment process. Interested residents should submit a letter of interest or participate in an interview with the PGY2 residency program director. Letters should identify what the resident hopes to accomplish through the PGY2 residency and be delivered to the PGY2 and PGY1 residency directors by December 9, 2011. Selected applicants will be notified no later than December 16, 2011.

Benefits

Estimated Salary is $44,522/year.  Benefits include health insurance, 13 days of vacation, 13 days of sick leave, 10 holidays, paid tuition and travel to required events, office with up-to-date computer systems and paid administrative leave for conferences and educational events.
