Pharmacy Residency Programs

The VA Sierra Nevada HCS and the VISN 21 PBM offer PGY-1 General Practice and PGY-2 Pharmacoeconomics Residencies.

VA Sierra Pacific Network

The VA Sierra Pacific Network (VISN 21)  is a large and geographically diverse service area, spanning nearly 500,000 square miles with a Veteran population exceeding 1.1 million.  This area includes central and northern California, northern Nevada, Hawaii and the Philippines.  VISN 21 has a proactive quality management program which ensures that facilities provide a predictable and consistent level of high quality care through the systematic and ongoing evaluation and monitoring of patient care outcomes.  The VA Sierra Pacific Network is also recognized for its stellar academic affiliations and cutting edge research programs that directly attribute to its success.  All six health care systems are teaching hospitals, affiliated with medical schools know for academic excellence.

VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System

The VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System (VASNHCS) provides a wide array of inpatient and outpatient services in medicine, surgery, women's health, mental health, interventional cardiology and radiology, neurology, pharmacy and  alcohol and drug treatment.  Geriatrics and extended care services include rehabilitation, skilled care, palliative care, respite, geriatrics evaluation , transitional and long term care.  Our care extends beyond the Reno metropolitan area with community based outpatient clinics (CBOCs) in Auburn, Fallon, Minden,  Susanville, and Winnemucca. In 2009, we served over 27,000 patients with over 300,000 outpatient and 4,300 inpatient visits.

The VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System, Reno is affiliated with the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Idaho State University School of Pharmacy and the Orvis School of Nursing, University of Nevada, Reno (UNR).

The Medical Center has a commitment to research with extensive pharmacy involvement.  In fact, we have a dedicated research pharmacist who is currently Principal Investigator (PI) on two ongoing studies.  In addition, we manage investigational medications for approximately 26 other active studies.  Areas of research include anticoagulation (home INR monitoring), oncology, pulmonology, cardiology, and sepsis.

The Medical Center has training programs in five allied health fields, has its own American Psychology Association accredited predoctoral psychology training program, and conducts residency training programs in internal medicine, general surgery, neurology, pharmacy and oncology.
