COVID-19 Vaccines

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized three COVID-19 vaccines. VA is following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidance to pause in providing the Janssen vaccine at this time. This pause is due to a concern about possible rare side effects. Your safety is our top priority. For more information, go to the CDC website. Read the CDC and FDA statement on the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine. If you have a vaccine appointment scheduled, your VA health facility will work with you to determine what to do next.

Congress has passed a new law that allows us to offer COVID-19 vaccines to more people. VA is now able to offer vaccine to the following groups who are eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine at VA when their local VA facilities have enough vaccine:

  • Veterans
  • Spouse of a Veteran
  • Caregivers of a Veteran
  • Recipients of Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA) benefits

The best way to stay informed is to sign up to tell us you'd like to get a COVID-19 vaccine at VA. Your local VA facility will then contact you when they have a vaccine for you.

For your continued health and safety during this pandemic, please don't come to a VA health facility to request a COVID-19 vaccine without an appointment unless you are coming to a specific scheduled event such as a walk-in clinic or drive-through clinic that does not require an appointment.

Note: Your employer, pharmacy, or local public health officials may offer you a COVID-19 vaccine. We encourage you to take the first opportunity you have to get a vaccine at the most convenient location for you.

SAVE LIVES Act - VA Vaccinations for ALL Veterans, Veteran Spouses, Veteran Caregivers, and CHAMPVA Beneficiaries

Effective Thursday, April 1, 2021, VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System is very excited to begin providing vaccines to those described in the SAVE LIVES Act, which was signed into law on Tuesday, March 24, 2021.

If you are already an eligible, VA healthcare-enrolled Veteran and wish to schedule a COVID-19 vaccine appointment, please call us during business hours from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday at 775-786-7200. Or, you can walk-in between 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

VA is now offering COVID-19 vaccines to all Veterans, their spouses, caregivers, and CHAMPVA beneficiaries. If you meet the SAVE LIVES Act criteria, VASNHCS is offering COVID-19 vaccines on a first come, first serve, walk-in basis, dependent upon vaccine availability. If you are a Veteran not yet enrolled, although not required, it is helpful if you bring your DD-214 (separation papers) with you.

COVID-19 vaccines are available currently at the Reno VA Medical Center located at 975 Kirman Avenue in Reno, Nevada. Please enter the main entrance and go to Primary Care to complete the initial paperwork and receive your vaccine. Please note that IF vaccine sessions are filled on a day you walk-in, we will schedule you for the soonest open appointment that accommodates your calendar.

On behalf of the VASNHCS staff, we are honored to continue to serve America's heroes, their spouses, caregivers, and family.

Respectfully,

Lisa Hamilton, Acting Director
VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System

Effective Monday, March 22, 2021, if appointments are available, our COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic will accommodate walk-ins. IF appointments are fully booked on a day a VA-eligible Veteran walks-in for a vaccination, we can schedule that Veteran for the next available appointment. Walk-ins are ONLY available at the main VA Medical Center located at 975 Kirman Avenue in Reno. Calling our main line (775-786-7200) beforehand to schedule an appointment remains the best way to ensure receiving the vaccine on the day and at the time best suited for the Veteran. We will continue to work hard to accommodate the Veteran's schedule.

Appointments can be made during business hours (Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Physical distancing and masks are required.

VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System (VASNHCS) is excited to provide the COVID-19 vaccine to eligible and actively enrolled Veterans at VA. Initially, we followed VA Prioritization Tier Levels and have had great success focusing efforts on our highest risk Veterans first. To date, we have administered over 19,000 vaccinations. We continue to receive vaccine shipments each week and work to use them as soon as they arrive.

VASNHCS may receive supplies of COVID vaccines by different manufacturers, and supplies are still limited. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers 2 FDA authorized Emergency Use Authorization COVID vaccines highly effective against COVID-19. When calling to schedule, you will be notified which manufacturer will be given in that specific vaccine clinic; the COVID vaccine manufacturer is also included in vaccine clinic name. If you have any questions about different COVID vaccine manufacturers, please reach out to your Primary Care Team.

Effective Wednesday, March 3, 2021, to ensure we can continue to vaccinate our Veterans as quickly as possible, VASNHCS has expanded vaccinations to all VA-eligible Veterans who receive care from VA.

Veterans not currently enrolled in VA health care who are interested in receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, are asked to call our main phone line (775-786-7200) to speak with Enrollment & Eligibility during business hours (Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Or, you can begin the enrollment process online at your convenience by visiting:  https://www.va.gov/health...apply/application/introduction We would love to welcome you into our health care system.
